Github announced a new office in India today. GitHub is a global company that provides hosting for software development version control using Git. It was acquired by Microsoft in 2018 for $7.5 billion. Nat Friedman, CEO of GitHub announced this on twitter.
According to the official blog,
Our goal is to create stronger relationships with developers and support open source development across developers, maintainers, and enterprises.
There is a rapid rise of developers and businesses using Github in India. As per the report published on Octoverse 2019 - The Github Blog, The third-largest number of active developers on Github are from India and there was 22 percent growth over the past year. The number of public repositories in India has grown 75 percent in the past year.
Benefits for the developer community
The local presence of Github will definitely have a positive impact on the open-source community in India. Github already has programs to encourage students for open-source contributions. It also provides GitHub Student Developer Pack, to give students free access to the best developer tools in one place so they can learn by doing.
Github announced the popular GitHub Hackathon Grant program to students in India as well, which supports student hackathons with up to $1,000 in grants.
With this new center in India, they are focusing to support Github Enterprise customers by expanding the channel partner programs.
